The Nature Den Glossary: Understanding Your Child’s Forest Journey
At Nature Den, we look at play through a specialist lens. We don't just see a child in the forest; we see a nervous system finding its balance. Here is a guide to the language we use in our observations and reports.
1. Proprioceptive "Heavy Work"
What it is: Input to the muscles and joints.
In the Forest: Pulling large branches, digging in thick mud, or climbing a steep slope.
The Benefit: This is the body’s "natural anchor." It helps children feel where their body is in space, which creates a deep sense of calm and helps "organize" a busy brain.
2. Vestibular Input
What it is: The sense of balance and spatial orientation.
In the Forest: Walking across a fallen log, jumping off a stump, or swinging from a low branch.
The Benefit: It tells the brain how to coordinate movement. Developing a strong vestibular system is a precursor to being able to sit still and focus in a classroom later on.
3. Executive Functioning
What it is: The "Air Traffic Control" center of the brain.
In the Forest: Deciding how to build a shelter, negotiating who gets the big stick, or planning a path through the ferns.
The Benefit: These are the skills needed for life: problem-solving, emotional control, and flexible thinking. The forest is the perfect, low-pressure "lab" to practice these.
4. The Social Model of Disability
Our Philosophy: We believe that "disability" happens when the environment doesn't match the child's needs.
In the Forest: We don't try to "fix" the child to fit a desk. We use the vast, open space in nature to remove the barriers (noise, walls, rigid rules), allowing the child’s natural strengths to shine.
5. Regulation & Agency
Regulation: The ability to stay calm and focused.
Agency: The power to make choices.
The Result: When a child has the Agency to choose their play, they find Regulation faster. A child who chooses to climb a tree is often more "ready to learn" than a child forced to sit in a chair.
Every decision we make is shaped by a clear sense of purpose.
What began as a passion project has evolved into something more. We’re proud of where we’ve been and even more excited for what’s ahead. What sets us apart isn’t just our process—it’s the intention behind it. We take time to understand, explore, and create with purpose at every turn.
